• Alipay can support most sites, however not enough English information provided.
• There had been a great improvement for this situation, however most of the instructions are still in Chinese. That’s why programmers who do not read Chinese could hardly understand and do the testing jobs.
• Alipay customer service is much more slower than Chinese team. Many clients and programmers out there are looking for the translation of Alipay integration manuals, actually there is existing ones. Is that stupid for Alipay to “hide” the English documents?

Tenpay is the main competitor of Alipay. Tenpay is developed by Tencent which owns the most popular IM in China – QQ with more than 300 million users.

More than 200,000 shopping websites accept Tenpay. Tenpay is compatible with the e-banking service of major domestic bank. Users can use Tenpay to send payment, receive payment and withdraw money to bank account. Users can also use Tenpay to charge mobile, deposit money to game account, and buy air ticket. I advise you to build a China local version website to deal with such problems.

Strict Testing

You need a working site without problems, esp. in the payment. You would never get money if payment module had problems. So you need test it again and again to ensure no problems happen.

Customer Service

Only payment is not enough, you should be able to answer your Chinese customers quickly so that you will win their trust and get more orders in the future.

Difference between Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese

The difference is very big. Most people who didn’t grow up in Guangdong and Hongkong can’t speak Cantonese.

Hongkong and Canton are both borrowed words from Cantonese.

SB is the abbreation for NIKE SKATEBOARDING.

However in Chinese, SB means fool, or moron, it is used as a curse word.

Green Hat Problem in Chinese Culture

In China “wearing a green hat” (戴绿帽子 or dài lǜ mào zǐ) is an expression that Chinese use when a woman cheats on her husband or boyfriend because the phrase sounds similar to the word for cuckold. This apparently dates back to the Yuan dynasty when the relatives of prostitutes were forced to wear green hats.

• Don’t wear green hats or SB printed shirts in front of Chinese, esp when you are in China, if you do not want to hear gigglings of women.

‘Word count’ function in most western popular sites works perfectly in English and other European languages.

But it counts a paragraph of Chinese words as 1 instead of a Chinese word as 1.

For example, the following words quoted should be 16 words, but the ‘word count’ counts it only three words.

You could find many translation wordcount tools fail to count Chinese.

Character Count for Chinese

You’ll learn about the standards and peculiarities of the word count in Chinese languages.

Writing unit in Chinese is hieroglyph. The main difficulty for word count is that hieroglyphs are not separated with spaces. This means that Chinese sentence «这是书» (This is a book – 3 words) is counted like a single word, in case the word count tool counts words basing on the spaces between words.

But if you think that these 3 hieroglyphs «全球化» are also a separate sentence, then you are wrong, since this is just an “globalization”. So the most logical method of text volume evaluation in Chinese is character count.

English->Chinese Word Count Ratio

When it comes to translation.  We should consider the word count ratio from one language to another.

Normally, a 1000 word English text translated into Chinese will be 1300-1800 characters long.

There is no exact science that can be used in every case.

It really does depend on the subject material.

Especially for technical or chemical translations where, for just one English word there could be as many as 8+ characters.
